Family portraits + train station = a photo session to remember

I was so happy when this family asked for their portrait session at the train station. What a great idea! It's urban, it has interesting architecture, and another cool thing is that they actually use the trains for vacation travel. (They gave me some great ideas!)

These sisters were so darling and happy together! I grew up with brothers so I always enjoy seeing sisters who are obviously very close.

My favorite parts of the train station are the arches! The perfect place for a family hug.

These girls, and their parents, made the whole session so much fun. They had sincere and beautiful smiles and kept us laughing the whole time.

Baby backdrop stands, or what I've been doing instead of posting about photography

Earlier this year, I had a light bulb moment. I had this idea for a newborn photography backdrop stand. My husband, who is always interested in a challenge, started thinking about it too. He experimented with tripods, folding chairs, pvc, steel, and tent poles. New incarnations of backdrop stands started accumulating in our living room. The stands kept getting better and better, until we were both really pleased with its form and function. We struggled quite a bit with finding suppliers, which I anticipate will continue, but eventually came up with a plan that seemed workable. Our latest venture, Bright Light Create, was born!

It's a round backdrop stand that you can adjust so that the sides and back are higher than the baby lying on a beanbag. That way no matter what angle you use, there should be smooth background behind him or her. This is awesome because usually I just hang the background on a stand behind the beanbag - all very well until you use a new angle to see the top of her head or toes, or need to change the lighting.

Also with this shape of stand, I can make sure that the blanket is always smooth behind the baby. I've spent way too much time editing blanket wrinkles out in the past, and it's not just me - there are tutorials out there teaching photographers how to do a "blanket fade" in Photoshop to make the background nice and smooth. This should eliminate fussing with editing out background mistakes later on.

It's light, it's strong, it's flexible, it's easy to assemble, it works for older babies too (pre-mobile babies anyway), and I think it looks really pro. Newborn baby round backdrop stand photography

There's still tons to do. We're making these ourselves (I have, personally, ground metal in the garage! I haven't welded yet but I sense it's coming) so when we sell more than a couple, we have to spend time in the garage making enough to ship. Eventually hopefully we will find a manufacturing partner and not do it all ourselves. Newborn baby round backdrop stand photography

Here's a couple of links if you're interested - we'd love some likes on our Facebook page, or if you see any mistakes on our webpage we'd love a heads up.

And there's photography going on too! More to come because it's almost fall here...

Can we bring our dog? Of course!

I think this family was one of my very first clients in Albuquerque. I love them. They go way, way back, before I had a blog. I would have to go a couple of hard drives worth of archives back to see their first portraits with me. It's always such a pleasure to see them again! This summer, they got a new dog - isn't she sweet? And what a great name - Karma. Professional portrait of a happy family children teenagers blue door location Albuquerque

Of course there are locations that aren't suitable for dogs, but if you'd like to include your dog, I am happy to make it work! They are welcome to come and eat my pine cones, like Karma did, or there are lots of other lovely locations around town that we can use where dogs are welcome.

This beautiful young lady was one of my favorite babysitters, many  years ago - now a college sophomore.

She played soccer with my daughter, many years ago (she kept playing much longer than my daughter did - mercifully because my daughter did not love it). Now a high school senior.

I found a session of theirs that I blogged from... 2009! Crazy. Look at these good looking kids (and young adults)! So glad to know them - thanks for coming for pictures!

Beautiful senior portraits, never mind the cold wind on top of the crest!

This beautiful high school senior visited New Mexico this summer from Texas, and wanted to get senior portraits done here. What a treat for me to meet her and her mom and brother! I love the idea of getting senior portraits done on vacation.

She told me there are no aspen trees near Houston. They're so beautiful!

I love talking to high school seniors about what they have planned. This girl has a great plan - she's working on a nursing degree now, which I think is so smart.

Since she's coming from an area with very different scenery, she wanted pictures taken up in the mountains on the crest, with the city view below. We planned to meet up on the top of Sandia Crest, and here is where I made my big mistake. It is August, so I knew it wouldn't be too cold up there, but just to be sure, I looked up the forecast in Cedar Crest, and thought it would be pretty close. It was for 75 degrees, which seemed just fine, and I told her family that summer is great even on our mountain crest.

So, we got out of the car to a cold, strong wind. It wasn't actually freezing, but it was COLD. Not what I expected! Luckily, she and her family had jackets. (I didn't, but I was definitely more worried about them than about me.)

The wind was serious, so we went inside the stone hut, and that's when it kicked up another notch or two. Too much wind to even wear this shirt for long. It was kind of ridiculous but she had a really great attitude about it. That makes any tricky situation much easier!

It was cold, as I may have mentioned, but the colors were beautiful and it was such a pleasure to work with this girl.

She and her brother have some drama in their souls...

And all three of them needed a portrait with the nice overlook. Smiling as their hair blew in the wind!

Gorgeous evening light in the foothills

When I work with a family for senior portraits, I also offer them a complimentary family session. I enjoyed working with this family very much! It was all fun and jokes the whole time - makes for a relaxing and entertaining family session.
