Big family reunion photography

 Family reunions are a great opportunity for a new family portrait!  In my family we do ours most summers if we all manage to get together.  I am the designated photographer and it's always fun to try to both be in the big group picture and also take it.  I have to say, I prefer to just take the picture and not appear in it. :)

I love having a reason to use my blog, especially this time of year when I have such a hard time getting around to it.  This amazing family got together last month for a big group portrait, and one of their families has since moved out of the country.  I am happy to blog some of their session, so that they can all see what we got.

Also I get inquiries about what sort of photography I do at these big get-together occasions, so I think it can be helpful to post something that's pretty typical.


Our main big group picture.  As is pretty normal, when there are a few young children involved in a group, photoshop helped us to get the best picture of everyone all at once.

 

And I totally love the Batman group picture.  What a great idea for something fun!
 

The "all the cousins" picture is always the hardest. :)

This one was tricky - I kept thinking the kids were going to slide off the log... sometimes I have a hard time being a photographer instead of being a mom...

I have never seen a newborn smile like this before!

Last week I met this baby girl. I think she was 10 days old. If you are a mom or you know anything about babies, you know that they don't smile until they are about 2 months old.  They are totally sweet, and they will smile in their sleep - I love it when I can catch a sleeping smile when I'm doing newborn portraits.  And sometimes they will even smile when they're awake, but it's fleeting.  This baby girl was DIFFERENT - she smiled all the time!  She just looks so happy and fun, and I found myself smiling right back at her the whole time.  I meet quite a few newborns, and I've never met one with a personality like this - her parents are in for such a good time!

 

She wasn't very interesting in sleeping for us, but we did get her to sleep for a little while.  We were glad that we had plenty of time allocated for her session, because it wasn't easy. :)




But waiting for the baby to sleep is always worth it.






It didn't last long, but who cares, when she will smile like this - awake!








*I admit* - this is a fake, she just blinked, she's not sleeping... but I thought it was sweet.


Congratulations to this really nice family - I loved meeting you all!  I hope she sleeps a lot more for you at home than she did here :) - and I hope she is fun & smiley like this her whole life!

More country wedding - the whole story

One of my favorite things about wedding photography is getting to tell the story of the day.  I posted a few images from this beautiful country wedding a little while ago, and now that I'm done with everything, I want to post an overview of the day.  I wasn't there all day, but I arrived at the ranch, a ways south of Gallup, in time to catch the bride before she was done getting ready.  Wedding days go by in the blink of an eye - even for the photographer :) - and it's such an honor to get to capture these memories.
